Apparently there’s a meme circulating on the Internet where a gun-toting Marjorie Taylor Greene is depicted on one side and on the other she is quoted as saying, in defense of why Spanish should not be taught at schools in the US, that “in this white, Christian nation, if English was good enough for Jesus, it’s good enough for me.”
The following is a response from a friend of mine to that meme on Quora. It has been lightly edited for style.
The meme made me actually shake my head.Really? English, in Palestine, 2000 years ago?In Palestine, 2000 years ago, they spoke Aramaic, Hebrew, Egyptian, Greek and Latin, give or take a language or two.Take your pick.
In any case, Yeshua (Hebrew for Jesus) was probably Middle Eastern fair, which is to say more like swarthy, black haired, probably not excessively tall, and with very, very curly haired. Also… wait for it… Jesus was Jewish. Not just Jewish, he was a descendent of King David! Royal Jewish blood.
They don’t call Christianity a Judeo-Christian religion for naught, you know. According to the same New Testament that Protestants and Evangelicals profess so loudly to read profoundly, the Apostles called Jesus “Rabbi”. So Jesus was not only of royal Jewish blood, he was a “Cohen,” belonging to the rabbinical caste. And Jesus was not any ordinary rabbi: He was a revolutionary one, who created a totally new sect. Why? Because he has the authority from On High to do it! He’s the son of God! And since he is made of the same substance as God, he IS God!That means that that sect Jesus created, Christianity, IS an offshoot of Judaism, one that chooses to leave behind rabbinical law and the Torah to rely on the New Testament instead, a “New, Eternal Covenant” that contains the teachings of Jesus Christ: Love, respect, charity, peace, acceptance, and compassion.So, Margie darling, deep down at the roots of your so-called “Anglo-Saxon tradition,” deep past the racist, sexist, misogynistic, disrespectful, hateful and uncharitable oxymoron you call Christian values, that you and your Godless ilk follow, corrupted and twisted from their original message by means of abject ignorance and bigoted prejudice? guess what…Wait for it…Wait for it…Those roots are Jewish!
