Here we are again, 4 years after the US elected a sensible man — albeit a bit on with the years — being subjected to the psychodrama that means yet another US election cycle.
This time, if the electoral trends hold, it will be the Republican candidate’s turn to occupy the White house for 4 more years.
As a moderate liberal, all I can say is, most sincerely, congratulations, Americans. You’ve done it again: You’ve elected someone incompetent to the highest office in the country. And if the margins are true, he also won the popular vote. Which makes him representative of the American democracy.
For the second time in a row, the American electorate has fallen prey to a toxic, narcissistic, senile, confidence man, who hoodwinked everybody into thinking he is going to make things better.
I do believe he is, but there is a slight, very tiny asterisk on that promise that the people have failed to see. Here, let me show you. He is going to make things better(*).
(*) For himself and his billionaire cronies.
So congratulations, Americans. You’ve been had — once again. And once again the world will be paying the consequences of your misguided decisions.
There are lessons to be learned here, of course. Time will tell which they are, but one starts to emerge, crystal-clear: A majority of voters lied on the polls. They said to the pollsters they’d vote for one candidate, to get them off their backs, and quietly voted for the other.
That is the only reasonable explanation to be evinced from the results of this night: There are no «undecided» voters: There is a quiet majority of people who have expressed their will, and a system that is far too vulnerable to being gamed, one way or the other. Either way, it is done. There is a new president in the US, and the world needs to reconcile itself with the fact that it is someone with no moral compass and many other character and moral flaws.
Happy trails, Americans, because you’re in for interesting times. May you live them to their fullest.
